Trying to kick....

Drinking bathtubs of carbonated, caffinated soda in the morning and at 5 o'clock pm dulling it with equal amounts of beer. I came to the point that it's all got to stop today...it has too.For my family, for my health.Today is the first day since 1977 that I have not had a Coke or Pepsi .I am freaking out.I want all that shit out of my system but am having a hard time.Any GIMers gone through something like this ? Thanks and no haters please.:smokin:

Good man it's worth it. :applause_ Best way to get rid of a habit is to replace it with another one (make sure it's a gd1).

I've got a blender a drink lots of smoothies with frozen fruit, frozen yoghurt and either juice or milk.
mm mm

good luck and don't fail at all otherwise you might never be able to break it.

That is exactly what I did. I now keep a mason jar for tea in the kitchen. Fill it half full of water, nuke it for 1.30, then add teabag. Seep for 3-5, remove bag and fill jar the rest of the way with ice. The mason jar doesnt have any issues with the temp range.

I really like the biglow black tea from Sams. Very strong, no bitter aftertaste.

Good luck, soda is a hard habit to break.

Yeah, I agree... pull out the blender and get some ice, fruit, and yogurt. Experiment with combinations of the three. I've even gone mostly ice and just enough fruit for flavor for a low cal drink. Guzzle this and it may help.

I imagine if you add some sugar free carbonated water it may help your pop withdrawal.

PS: congrats for kicking soda... that sh*t'll kill ya.

You'll need quite a macho blender to properly grind the ice. The ice part properly done is what make the drink refreshing imo. Also, investing in a macho blender commits you to using it... :D

Doesn't tea have more caffeine than coffee? Or is green tea different?

The black tea I drink is loaded, green tea has very little to no caffeine.

But I justify it because it is natural caffeine, as opposed to the crap they put in sodas.

Re: Trying to kick....

Yeah smoothies are good stuff. A simple smoothie can be just OJ, a banana, & yogurt. Maybe some ice cubes to make it colder. But in loo of ice cubes I started freezing certain fruits which will otherwise go bad before I can eat them. Peel bananas when they're perfect, roll them up in plastic wrap, & freeze. Costco sells big bags of frozen strawberries, they've already got the tops cut off them. They also sell these frozen bags of a 3 berry mix, raspberries, blueberries, & marionberries. They sell flats of peaches, perhaps 14, and I cut them in half when they're ripe, toss out the pit, & cut them into quarters, and freeze all the quarters in a bag. I just quarter them so the blender can blend the frozen quarters easier. Costco sells plain yogurt by the half-gallon container. Occasionally I even put in cantaloupe, & sometimes an egg white for more protein.

Sweet. Wear eye protection... ;) :D

Now you likely can't go wrong with almost any fruit, but the mangosteen is supposed to be one of the most healthy out there and is full of antioxidants. If you live near an asian grocer maybe try adding some (in addition to familiar fruits) to your smoothie. After peeling it looks like an albino orange.

And regarding your blender: AAArgh AAArgh!!!

I can sympathize. I drink several 16 oz Dr. Peppers per day, actually I've cut back to as few as two but if I'm not watching I can down a 6-pack of them easy. I usually go to bed with one on my nightstand.

I also drink a pot of coffee per day too. When I eat out I drink unsweetened tea. Caffeine is my downfall, as I very rarely drink any alcohol. I know it would do me good to quit the soda, but I'm one of the lucky metabolizers who can stay lean and it doesn't seem to cause me any problems health wise.

Good luck kicking the habit!

Hope you stay with it.
Tired of hearing about people that are gonna change the world, yet continue to engage in behavior that not only weakens the individual , but feeds the beast.
It isn't hard man, get your head around it.
Good luck.
Joined a Ron Paul group. They met at Arby's for lunch every time. Attnded a single meeting ,told them my thoughts, -- they still met at Arby's for "lunch". I have no use for them. There's stuff you either "get", or you don't.
There was a golfer, one of the greats. A man Tiger woods still needs to catch in many record books. No , Not Jack. Sam Snead. They used to make fun of his swing and his unorthodox grip etc.
They'd askd him who was his teacher, his pro.
He told them"'ll have found a "teacher" when I found someone that could beat me>"

Sam Snead was one of the greats, and he really did things his way, including playing barefoot.

As far as kicking any habit, you have to keep a positive attitude and strong frame of mind. Instead of looking at the situation as giving up something (not saying you are, but as an example), think of it as every time and everyday you don't indulge in your previous habit, you are taking care of yourself and making yourself stronger...and you get stronger everyday that you stick to your plan.

Never let a substance dominate your will. Be your own master and use this opportunity to put things in the direction you desire. Don't let up, and if you slip, start right back getting it right.

Best of luck.

congrats on the decision to kick the habit. I stopped drinking soda for a while and it was great. for me, I just get UNSWEETENED iced tea if I'm eating out, and otherwise I drink black coffee with lowfat milk, no sugar.

I kicked soda a few months ago, well not completely I still have 1 a week, just because I think that 1 a week won't effect me much at all and once a week I'm in a location where soft drinks are plentiful. I still drink beers though.

I would say kick the coke, but beer is ok with some amount of moderation IMO. But definantly IMO soda will be the much easier of the 2, it's so unnecessary, it doesn't even give a buzz!

Anything with water in it will have fluoride in it probably, so one can only do so much.

My main vices are cigarettes and the ganja, so I know how difficult this crap can be to kick.

Good luck to you!! Stick it to the venom peddlers.

I'm not actually trying to kick my caffeine habit since I don't see it as a big problem. I managed to lose ~35 lbs and go back to a size 32 from a 38 when I realized one day I'd become fat. It just took me getting comfortable with being hungry throughout the day.

But you are entirely correct about me spending too much time on the computer and not doing enough to change. I'm not seeking salvation from GIM though, just information and a since of community.

Re: Trying to kick....

Glad to hear you're working on kicking this habit. It's pretty tough to go "cold turkey" but it'll do you good in the long run. I used to go through a 12 pack of 7-Up every 3 or 4 days when I was a kid, plus I'd drink coca-cola working on the turkey farm all the time, and I finally realized that I needed to do something about it when I hit 210 and I got fired from the turkey farm because I was fat, overweight, and slow! Today, I drink 1 soda every 2-4 weeks and make sure that it's a clear soda (dark sodas are "burnt" , even worse for you). I usually only drink that at Taco Johns... buy Sierra Mist because they don't have iced tea and it's not caffeniated... I can't buy iced tea at McDonalds because it has such a powerful "kick" that I can't get to sleep until 3am sometimes if I drink the stuff after 7pm. Same thing with Hardees tea. I also used sodium ascorbate/vitamin C for awhile and that helps to kick habits, as well as a clay routine. One thing that you have to take into consideration, and Christ said this as well, keep it SIMPLE. On other message boards, people advise all of these different things, and we just need to remember to keep it SIMPLE and find the easiest and cheapest solution to the problem at hand. Maybe, for you, it might be iced tea, but that does have caffine in it. For a refreshing drink, I like to use apple cider vinegar 1tbsp, or lemon or lime juice, 2tbsp per quart, and that works well. Maybe your best remedy would be internal clay or some other detoxification protocol such as powdered sodium ascorbate, as that will help to detox from all the sodas that you've been drinking over your lifetime. Hope this helps.

Tea is a great way of prising yourself off the evil that is cola (or coffee). I have gone back to drinking tea at work, over coffee and I feel far better for it.

Cola will totally ruin your teeth, your gut, and make you a diabetic given the chance.

Re: Trying to kick....

I remember I got pretty stuck on drinking Jolt for a while, when I was going to school and working and had to stay up a lot. It certainly helps you stay up--even when you don't want to. The main problem I noticed (and that I didn't realize until after quitting) was that I couldn't sleep very well while I was drinking lots of the stuff.

------

Now I keep a coffee-creamer shaker full of natural sugar in the kitchen. When I have a want for something sweet, I shake a bit of it into my mouth and then drink some water (-I always eat it over the kitchen sink now, so the dropped sugar doesn't collect on the floor and attract bugs--I have done learned that lesson!-). Looks silly maybe but hits the spot. The sugar gives a bit of energy, but without the caffeine and corn sweeteners. It's a lot cheaper than buying any soda (or other manufactured drink) that I know of. And it's enough of a hassle that I don't do it a whole lot, maybe 1-2 times a day--but just that has kept me from buying sweet stuff to eat. Overall I would bet that I am drinking much less "bad stuff" this way than when I was buying a 2-liter of soda every couple days.

I still drink soda when I am "out", at work or whatever, and sometimes buy a small 20oz bottle to drink at home--but rarely buy anything bigger anymore unless other people are going to be helping drinking it.

-end-

I had a caffiene addiction when I was in the Military a long time ago. If you wake up at 3am with a splitting headache, it might be caffiene withdrawal. Good luck with it man! Drink water, maybe take Chantix.

Re: Trying to kick....

I got real sick once after eating a chocolate donut and having a pepsi or coke. The sickness wasn't related to either, it was just something I picked up from a family member, but after I was finally all better again I couldn't touch anything sweet and chocolate, or any type of pop, or even coffee. I associated all the above with feeling like crap (I had eating the donut and drank the coke in a coffee shop, the smell was in the air.) That was at least a decade ago. I can eat and drink those things now, but I get no enjoyment out of it.

Alcohol is something I've always liked to have a steady stream of. Just a few drinks a week. And I could always quit for weeks or months, no problem. But then one day I'd get a dry scratchy throat, and nothing except a beer would take it away. Happened every time I went without booze for a long time. Eventually I realized it was just my body doing something subtle to get what it wanted, and if I went even longer it would just go away and I'd feel fine. That's the kind of weirdness you face when quitting anything.
